Pastor Rides Dirt Bike Off Platform During Sermon

By Ken Horn | July 22, 2008

Motorcycle chaplains and innovative pastors beware.

Pastor Injured in Dirt Bike Accident During Church Service

A pastor brought out a dirt bike during a church service to demonstrate the concept of unity. Now he’s demonstrating the concept of healing.

Jeff Harlow, the senior pastor at Crossroads Community Church, broke his wrist when he lost control of the motorcycle at the start of Sunday’s second service, driving off a 5-foot platform and into the vacant first row of seats. He underwent surgery on the wrist Monday.

“Jeff has already laughed a lot, so he’s OK. I think his pride was bruised,” said his wife, Becky.

Abortion Given to Wrong Woman

By Ken Horn | July 20, 2008

This tragic case in England is yet another reason to outlaw abortion. If abortion were illegal, this could not have happened. A nurse gave a chemical abortion solution to the wrong expectant mother, who will not only lose her child, but has also suffered physically.

Read this incredibly tragic story … and pray that God will stop this great sin of legalized abortion. Pray also for this poor wronged woman.

Facebook Helps the Law

By Ken Horn | July 19, 2008

Facebook is having a benefit beyond its stellar social networking aspect. It is sending criminals to prison. This morning, in an article titled, “Facebook Evidence Sends Unrepentant Partier to Prison,” the Associated Press uncovered lack of repentance in the case of a drunken driver who seriously injured a woman.

Worse, the pictures actually reveal scorn for his victim. Because of that he will serve time.

The article begins:

Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the 20-year-old college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner.
Pictures from the party showed him in a black-and-white striped shirt and an orange jumpsuit labeled “Jail Bird.”

In the age of the Internet, it might not be hard to guess what happened to those pictures: Someone posted them on the social networking site Facebook. And that offered remarkable evidence for Jay Sullivan, the prosecutor handling Lipton’s drunken-driving case.

God Makes Some Beautiful Sunsets

By Ken Horn | July 14, 2008

Tug and Barge at Sunset
And they can make ordinary things captivating, like this tug boat and barge I shot last year. That’s the way God is—shedding His beautiful light on ordinary things to make something attractive and valuable of the common.

He does that with every life He touches.

God Is Good; I’ll Be Back Soon

By Ken Horn | July 12, 2008

Regular readers of Snapshots have noticed that my usual frequency of new posts has dropped off significantly this month. I have been out of commission following a double surgery to remove my gall bladder and repair a hernia. I haven’t felt up to doing much blogging or writing. Managing Editor Kirk Noonan filled in for me on my most recent column due for TPE.

But I am bouncing back and hope to be in the office on Monday. Please begin checking my blog again.

And thanks to those of you who knew of my surgery and sent get-well wishes. They have been much appreciated.

I believe in healing. And sometimes God uses doctors to accomplish it. I am thankful to God, and to the doctors and nurses He used.

Air Force Chief of Chaplains Major General Cecil R. Richardson spoke in yesterday’s chapel service at Assemblies of God Headquarters here in Springfield, Missouri yesterday. Richardson, an ordained AG minister, is a powerful speaker and has a great testimony. Not long ago, I did two podcasts with him over the phone, just before he was promoted to Air Force Chief of Chaplains. You will enjoy these.

Here they are:

Respecting Age

By Ken Horn | June 27, 2008

My May 25 Vantage Point has pulled in more mail than we usually get. So I’d like to share it with my blog readers who may not have seen it. I’ve included a few of the responses we have received.

Respecting Age

OK, I realize older people can get cranky and defensive about “the way things used to be.” The older we get, the more “the good old days” dominate our thoughts. And often, the older we get, the better they seem — though in reality those days of fond memory were seldom as good as we remember them.

But the church is changing by leaps and bounds, and on many fronts the group of believers that is increasingly left out in the cold is older Christians. And, church, we need them.

Society as a whole has changed dramatically. Courtesy is no longer a de facto part of the upbringing of children. Expressions of appreciation are increasingly rare, and the valuing of the aged among us is nearing extinction.

Unfortunately, some of this has crept into the church.

Churches today are overwhelmingly crafted to appeal to younger congregations. I have been told, on more than one occasion, “They have had their day. If anyone needs to sacrifice, it should be them.” Many older saints are willing to do that. Some have told me, “I don’t enjoy the music, and I can’t relate to a lot of the things we do, but when I see young people excited about serving Jesus, I know it is worth it.”

Most older saints are willing to take this view if God is honoring the changes. But it is hard on most of them. They are experiencing culture shock.

And they deserve consideration.

More than consideration, they deserve notice. Our older saints have something to give. Unlike the trend in our society, the church should honor and respect them.

Young Christians need to become their friends and absorb the heritage of the godly aged among us.
I call upon younger believers and pastors to consider the needs of older Christians, become involved in their lives, and receive the wisdom they have to give … before it’s too late.

Let us know your opinion. And most of all, let us know if you have ideas for bringing the generations together. If your church is doing this effectively, let us know how. Selected responses may appear in the Today’s Pentecostal Evangel letters page.

Book Review: Jonathan Edwards: A Life by George M. Marsden

By Ken Horn | June 26, 2008

My review of this great book was posted on the Yale University Web site, after being published in Today’s Pentecostal Evangel. Here it is:

“This book will be a delight to lovers of religious biography and the history of revival. This may be the most comprehensive of the many biographies of Edwards. It also surpasses others by showing the human side of the great man better than most or all past biographies. There is some surprising material here that sheds light on key events of Edwards’ life. All Christians should be interested in Edwards. This book is an excellent way to get to know him.”

This is a weighty volume. If you have not read about Edwards, it is probably not the place to start. It’s good to have some familiarity with his significance in revival (and American) history first. It will give you perspective on why he deserves so many pages.
