A Lesson From NASCAR
By Ken Horn | September 10, 2008
Are you a stroker?
According to ESPN: The Magazine, the term stroker is used in NASCAR for “a racer who doesn’t contend, preferring to protect his car and take safe finishes.”
Driver Elliott Sadler says, “A stroker just shows up, makes the race, finishes 25th, takes his check and goes home. It’s worked for a lot of people for a long time, but honestly, I don’t know how they live like that.”
There are way too many Christian “strokers”—people who show up at church, do just enough, and never risk anything or get out of their comfort zones.
Colossians 3:23 is the Bible’s “No Strokers” verse: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men” (NIV).
Yes, lots of believers ignore this part of God’s Word, leaving themselves, the church, and the world poorer for it. In the words of NASCAR driver Sadler, “honestly, I don’t know how they live like that.”
