Was Moses High On Drugs?

By Ken Horn | March 5, 2008

In a new article that is not destined to go down in history (just to go down), a “researcher” has made an outrageous claim: Moses and the Children of Israel were high on drugs.

The author, Benny Shanon, is a psychology professor at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University, and claims the ancient Jews were under the influence of a hallucinogenic plant when the Ten Commandments were delivered, according to Reuters.

According to Shanon’s “Time and Mind” in the British journal, the thunder, lightning and sound of the trumpet in Exodus 19 and 20 could have been the results of an “altered state of awareness” from plants in the Sinai desert.

Shanon’s research includes partaking of the hallucinogenic brew “about 160 times in various locales and contexts,” according to Reuters.

Why does this not make me want to believe him?

For two centuries now, “learned scholars” have been looking for ways to discount or twist the Bible’s meaning. This is just the latest ludicrous attempt.

There is not much for Christians to worry about. It is easy to see through claims like this. Somehow I think that the Book that continues to be the world’s best seller can stand up for itself. This Book is transforming lives every day, and we can take what it says at face value. Let the critics embarrass themselves.

The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.
