Young Jesus

By Ken Horn | January 16, 2008

We receive books on a daily basis that publicists and authors hope we will review. I just received a pre-publication copy of Young Jesus by Jean-Pierre Isbouts, a professor of some note.

According to the promo, “Dr. Isbouts’ revolutionary biography … offers several startling revelations” about Jesus. Among them is one prefaced with this phrase: “Contrary to what the gospels may argue ….”

What we have here is yet another author claiming to know more about Jesus than the New Testament. Books like this come out from time to time, offering “startling revelations” that supposedly show the Bible to be wrong. I was not surprised to find that Dr. Isbouts has been the writer/director for three television specials on biblical history.

Typically, television documentaries about the Bible are weighted heavily with “liberal” theologians, those who hold a low view of the accuracy of the Bible. “Conservative” theologians, those who believe the Bible to be God’s inerrant Word, usually get token exposure, if any.

Dr. Isbouts has great credentials. But no credentials qualify an individual to replace the Bible’s account with their own version. Such books should be labeled “fiction.”
